The Republic of India is the most ethnically diverse country on earth. It is made up of 2,500 distinct people groups living over 28 states and 7 union territories.

Christians are believed to make up around 5.5% of the total population of over 1.2 billion, with Hinduism being the majority religion. Though the constitution provides for full freedom of religion, militant Hinduism together with an increasing number of states adopting anti-conversion laws, has resulted in an escalation of attacks against Christians in recent years.
