The Republic of Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, having a population numbering in excess of 158 million. There are over 520 ethnic groups.

Though Nigeria is a secular state with freedom of religion enshrined in its constitution, Christians in the northern and central states, where Islam dominates, endure severe persecution. In recent years many hundreds of Christians have died and churches have been destroyed in violent attacks perpetrated by radical Islamic groups.
